The  reflection circle

The Reflection Circle is a weekly activity organized by MSA Avicenna with the aim of nurturing the soul and supporting spiritual growth. In each circle, participants reflect on an ayah from the Qur’an, a hadith, or a personal or societal challenge, all from an Islamic perspective.

Before the session begins, a topic is selected by one of the participants. At the start of the circle, roles are assigned, such as a moderator, note-taker, and minutes-taker, to ensure a respectful and well-structured discussion. The session then begins with an introduction to the topic by the person who proposed it, followed by a moment of silence, allowing everyone to set their intentions before the reflection starts.

During the circle, participants raise their hands to speak and are encouraged to share openly while keeping the discussion focused and respectful. Everyone speaks from the center of the circle so that reflections remain general rather than personal. In the Reflection Circle, no one is above another; sincerity, humility, and kindness are core values. After approximately one hour, the session concludes with another moment of silence.

The Experience of the Reflection Circle

Having a weekly Reflection Circle provides a continuous source of Islamic reminders. These reminders help participants become more mindful in their worship, particularly in improving focus and intention (niyyah) in daily religious practices. The emphasis on intention is a powerful lesson that often extends beyond the circle into everyday life.

The Reflection Circle is also a strong source of inspiration. Each session includes at least three participants, both men and women, from diverse cultural backgrounds, countries, and age groups. This diversity brings a wide range of perspectives and lived experiences, which can be deeply helpful when reflecting on personal or societal challenges. Often, some of the most insightful reflections come from the youngest participants.

On a behavioral level, participating in the Reflection Circle encourages greater consideration, empathy, and depth of thought. Engaging with people from different backgrounds and perspectives teaches participants to think more carefully, listen more attentively, and take others into account when reflecting and responding.
